Go Jónsi Go

Release date and cover

The release date of Jónsi's debut solo album, 'Go', has been confirmed for the week of April 5th around the world*. Featuring 9 songs drawn from the large pool of material amassed by Jónsi during his many years as singer with Sigur Rós, and arranged in collaboration with classical wunderkind Nico Muhly ("one of the hottest composers on the planet" Daily Telegraph last week), the album now has a finished sleeve, conceptualised and realised by Jónsi's sisters Inga and Lilja. Here's how it looks:

Meanwhile, details of his first live concerts outside of Sigur Rós will be announced next Monday (Feb 1). The shows which start in North America in April, will feature a brand new band and a stage set designed by 59 Productions. Both these things promise to be drop-dead amazing. The idea of the stage collaboration with 59 Productions is to bring together the worlds of theatre and music in a new and hopefully unique way, in order to create something other than the hoary old cliches that pass for innovation in rock'n'roll. The ideas remain very much "in development", but there will be some surprises, for sure. Here's a maquette (a tiny cardboard model, to you and me) of how things might appear. Cute, huh?

Anyway, we wanted you to know we are going for broke on this and it ain't in any way going to be Jónsi alone on stage with an acoustic guitar, no sirree. Wish us luck.

Worriedaboutsatan - Arrivals (live)

«Σε δύο ώρες φεύγω με το τρένο για Κρακοβία. Έχεις κάτι καλό ν’ ακούσω;»

Το Evil Dogs των Worriedaboutsatan είχε μόλις ξεκινήσει να παίζει, όταν με διέκοψε η φράση του Ν. Η εισαγωγή του με τους ήχους του τρένου που τρέχει δαιμονισμένα, έμοιαζε με σατανική σύμπτωση. Έτσι, αναπόφευκτα, το Arrivals φορτώθηκε εικονικά μαζί με τις αποσκευές του Ν. αφήνοντάς μου ως ενέχυρο τις σκέψεις και τις εικόνες ενός φανταστικού ταξιδιού με τρένο στη Κρακοβία.

(Θυμήθηκα το Autobahn των Kraftwerk και σκέφτηκα πως κάποιοι δίσκοι θα έπρεπε να συνοδεύονται από το ειδικό αυτοκόλλητο με την ένδειξη «ιδανικός να ακουστεί σε ταξίδι με τρένο»).

Δεν γνωρίζω αν οι Worriedaboutsatan είχαν στο μυαλό τους τρένα κατά τη δημιουργία του Arrivals. Αυτό που είναι σίγουρο όμως, είναι πως με αυτόν τον πρώτο ολοκληρωμένο δίσκο τους (είχαν προηγηθεί 2 EP self-released πριν υπογράψουν στη Gizeh: το EP01 που κυκλοφόρησε το 2006 και είχε τη μορφή demos και το EP02, το 2007, με κάποιες νέες ηχογραφήσεις και επεξεργασίες του υλικού του EP01) επιχειρούν να ταξιδέψουν στα βάθη της electronica. Με αφετηρία το Leeds, τα δύο «σατανικά» * μέλη Gavin Miller και Tom Ragsdale, φορτώνουν τις βαλίτσες τους με τα απομεινάρια των επιρροών τους, όπως Mogwai και Explosions in the Sky, μια πληθώρα ήχων που συλλέγουν από ποικίλες πηγές, φυσικές ή ηλεκτρονικές και όλες τις αντανακλάσεις των μουσικών πειραματισμών τους, όπως minimal techno, ambient και IDM. Αποτέλεσμα, μια σειρά οργανικών συνθέσεων που δεν κατατάσσονται εύκολα. Αν και η καρδιά τους παραμένει ηλεκτρονική, δεν αρνούνται τις post rock καταβολές τους (όπως αυτές εκφράζονται μέσα από τους εύθραυστους τόνους της κιθάρας του You’re In My Thoughts) και τα δανεικά στοιχεία από άλλους λιγότερο αναγνωρίσιμους κόσμους. Οι πολυρυθμικές μηχανικές υφές απουσιάζουν και η δημιουργία έντασης επιτυγχάνεται όχι με τη δημιουργία κορυφώσεων, αλλά με τη διατήρηση μιας συνεχούς αναμονής. Οι δυνατότητες της electronica δεν λειτουργούν επιδεικτικά και ως λάβαρο πρωτοπορίας, αλλά ως υπενθύμιση ενός μέσου ικανού να πλάσει οράματα άγνωστα.

Χαρακτηριστικό δείγμα το μινιμαλιστικό Evil Dogs, που από την αρχή λειτουργεί ως υπνωτιστική παγίδα των συναισθημάτων, για να σε εκτινάξει στη στρατόσφαιρα και στη μη γήινη, κρουστή και φασματική ατμόσφαιρα που δημιουργούν τα τρία άτιτλα tracks (., .., …). Κι από το απόλυτο τίποτα, επιστρέφεις στον μοναχικό, μετρονομικό χορό των παιδικών και στοιχειωμένων από το Kid A πλήκτρων του History Is Made At Night, για να βυθιστείς στην θρηνητική δίνη από βόμβους και βιομηχανικά σφυρίγματα του All Things But You Are Silent. Ή να οδηγηθείς από τους υπόκωφους ήχους του I’m A Crooked Man σε νυχτερινές υπνοβασίες, μέχρι οι ανάλαφροι ambient ήχοι του ομώνυμου Arrivals διαλύσουν κάθε ίχνος δεισιδαιμονίας.

Οι Worriedaboutsatan σου προσφέρουν ένα περίεργο κι άκρως ελκυστικό ταξίδι, που ίσως δεν έχεις κάνει ποτέ. Ένα ταξίδι όμως μοναχικό, με συντροφιά τις σκέψεις και τους κινδύνους που ενέχουν αυτές. Όπως τα 6¨33 λεπτά αδιάκοπου σφυροκοπήματος με κώδικα Μορς του Pissing About, που λειτουργούν ως μουσική περιγραφή της τρέλας, διακόπτοντας για λίγο το ταξίδι...

* άχρηστη πληροφορία: το όνομα Worriedaboutsatan αποτελεί B-side του single Theme from Turnpike, που κυκλοφόρησαν το 1996 οι Βέλγοι DEUS.

Τα αγαπημένα soundtracks της δεκαετίας

27 bloggers

και λάτρεις της κινηματογραφικές μουσικής

ανταποκρίθηκαν στο κάλεσμά μου για την ανάδειξη των

20 αγαπημένων sountracks της δεκαετίας που μας πέρασε.

Η συμμετοχή με χαροποίησε ιδιαίτερα, μιας και όσο κι αν είναι αγαπητή

η κινηματογραφική μουσική, δεν βλέπουμε συχνά συνολικές λίστες

αποτίμησης, χάνοντας έτσι την ευκαιρία για ένα καλό flashback.

Ο μοναδικός όρος της ψηφοφορίας ήταν

η μουσική να είναι αποκλειστικά γραμμένη για την ταινία.

Έτσι, απουσιάζουν συλλογές με μη πρωτότυπες μουσικές

(κανείς δεν αμφισβητεί την αξία τους),

επανεκδόσεις παλαιότερων soundtracks

και soundtracks που το μεγαλύτερο μέρος τους δεν είναι πρωτότυπο.

Ψηφίστηκαν συνολικά 213 soundtracks.

Παρόλα αυτά, όπως θα δείτε κι από τη διαφορά που παρουσιάζουν

τα 15 πρώτα, αυτά ήταν που μονοπώλησαν και το ενδιαφέρον

όσων έλαβαν μέρος, εξαφανίζοντας έτσι πιο προσωπικές επιλογές.

Το γεγονός πως τα 15 πρώτα συμπίπτουν και με αντίστοιχη ψηφοφορία

για τις 20 αγαπημένες ταινίες της δεκαετίας,

με κάνουν να θεωρώ πως τελικά η κινηματογραφική μουσική

είναι άρρηκτα δεμένη με τις ταινίες και σπανίως λειτουργεί αυτόνομα.

Οι δημοφιλείς ταινίες λοιπόν, έχουν και δημοφιλή soundtracks.

The safe rope is breaking, and I won't find my way back to you...

Though few could have predicted it would have turned out this way, anyone who has followed Her

Name is Calla knew they would continue to defy a foreseen progression. As a crossroads emerged

between oblivion and uncertainty, the latter was chosen as the band swelled in equal measure of rank

and fear. The Union into the unknown proved surprising and fortuitous, however, as the group parted

with Gizeh Records and made the long awaited journey into Europe with live dates and a release of

The Heritage on CD and glorious 12" vinyl on Denovali.

Long Grass is the first emerging sound of the forthcoming, long anticipated full length album 'The

Quiet Lamb', which follows in the fitting season of Spring. From this

initial offering, it's clear that the

eventual release is far removed from the projected vision of years past. A swollen, heartfelt Her Name

is Calla shovel and uncover a folksier, delicate undertone amidst the soil of a now buried recent past.

Piano, mandolin, banjo and violin pluck and punctuate the soft, acerbic, breathy air of age and

abandonment. Adam Weikert emerges from behind the drum kit to steer and engineer the new sound

with frontman Tom Morris on both the title track and A Sleeper, a new version of a rare favourite

amongst fans: the demo of which was included on just 20 personalised copies of The Heritage.

Extended and reworked, A Sleeper glistens with optimism and moistened eyes, as hearts explode like

stars and fallout becomes final.

release precedes a UK tour in March with friends Worriedaboutsatan, which continues in Europe

Jay Reatard

It has been confirmed that Jay Reatard has died. He was 29

Goner Records writes, "It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our good friend Jay Reatard. Jay died in his sleep last night. We will pass along information about funeral arrangements when they are made public." The MemphisCommerical Appeal reports that Reatard was found in his home at 3:30 am this morning.

Reatard, born Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr., was a staple of the Memphis garage rock scene for years before bursting on the national scene with 2006's Blood Visions and subsequently signing to Matador. His most recent album, Watch Me Fall, came out last year.

A statement from Matador reads, "Jay was as full of life as anyone we've ever met, and responsible for so many memorable moments as a person and artist. We’re honored to have known and worked with him, and we will miss him terribly."
